SUBJECT: WINDOW TINT EXEMPTIONS

PLEASE BRING THIS MESSAGE TO THE ATTENTION OF THE STATION OWNER AND/OR MANAGER

This message supplements instructions in NYVIP messages 225 and 226 for windshield window tinting inspection requirements.

In addition to medical exemptions, the Vehicle and Traffic Law (VTL) Section 375(33) provides for the exemption of window tint standards on certain vehicles. A list of vehicle types that are exempt from these standards is below:

  • Marked or Unmarked Police Vehicles (owned or operated by a police agency)
  • Marked or Unmarked Fire Vehicles (owned or operated by a fire department)

Therefore, you are not required to test the light transmittance (window tinting) on any of the vehicle types listed above.
